About me

Iztok Klančar

Born in 1980, Trbovlje, Slovenia
; based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands

I am a visual storyteller. I graduated in photography at the Royal academy of art in The Hague in 2012. I also have background as an art historian. In 2006, I graduated at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana with a thesis on photography in the Slovenian LGBT scene.

My video and photographic work was shown in relevant art institutions (Nederlands Fotomuseum, GEM, Showroom MAMA, Tokyo Photo, Plat(t)form – Fotomusem Winterthur), as well as in alternative venues with their own dedicated audience.

My artistic research begins with making of a photo diary, as well as written observations. I relate these materials with my inner world and then reassemble them into new stories. The final result of this process is video, combined with atmospheric electronic music.

In my work, I am interested in our intrinsic feelings and needs. By means of immersing my audience into landscapes, I aim to strip them from their past experience. I try to reveal the core of our existence – vulnerable and instinctive as much as we can be.

My graduation work – My Men (2012) – is a story about two men, a record of two intimate relationships. I then went further, exploring the non-verbal physical language of two women dancing (Dark Marrow, 2013). The videos of my Reverence project (2015) go deeper into exploring the lurking darkness behind our sexuality. I took a step further in my latest work, Safe Place (2017), where I depict rituals of people who interact with nature and thereby release their hidden selves.

Besides my video installations and photography work, I also perform a monologue with visuals. I bundle my diary entries into semi-fictional stories that convey an inner journey – a deep, yet still universal introspection.
